Dry hair problems always seem to get worse this time of year, as the winter cold approaches and after the sun has spent the summer months weathering locks. Autumn is the perfect season to get into the habit of looking after our hair. Hair masks and treatments are super expensive; especially for teenage girls that are saving for Christmas! So I thought I would look for some DIY hair masks online and these are the top results I've found! I'm going to tell you how to make and apply them. I hope this helps at least one of you!
My hair is naturally a light brown colour and is wavy. Over the years (sounds like I am way older that what I am!) I've had many sets of highlights, bleached ends which were coloured over with every colour you could think of and a full head of semi-perminant dye (browny/auburn). After I was finished with the whole 'dip-dye' trend my ends were... a disaster to say the least. They were an awful bleached blonde almost green, dry and just plain damaged. I got most of the 'green' cut off but wasn't willing to sacrifice my long locks to get it all off. So it was a full head of semi-perminant colour to cover the 'green'! I've had blonde highlights after that which I let grow out about two inches and last week I got some lowlights of my natural colour and a little darker. That was the last of the 'green' cut out and words cannot describe the relief! Looking to get your hair dip-dyed? My advice is DON'T. I wan't to grow my hair longer as I think its at a awkward 'in-between' length right now. SO! I, Georgia, vow to keep my hair as healthy as I can. I want long locks and I will work for it! HAIR MASK TIME!
*I do not claim to have thought up these recipes myself.*
Honey and Olive Oil Mask
This mask is perfect for hair that is dry! Wether it is by too much heat styling (which we are all guilty of), sun-damage or just plain damaged all round this mask will be perfect. Honey locks in and attracts moisture and the olive oil provides it - they are a perfect pair!
To use -
1. Start of by mixing about a 1/2 cup of honey with 1-2 tablespoonfuls of olive oil in a bowl. (more or less of both depending on the length and thickness of hair)
2. Massage into clean, damp hair and let it soak in 20 minutes. (cover with a shower cap if desired)
3. Rinse of with warm water and style as usual.
Egg Yolk, Honey and Olive Oil Mask
Like the mask above, this mask works wonders on dry hair. The egg yolk is rich in protein which will help replenish the keratin protein bonds that UV rays attack. So it works especially well for hair that has had a little too much sun!
To Use -
1. Start of by separating the yolk from the white of the egg, discard the white.
2. Mix the egg yolk with about a 1/2 cup of honey with 1-2 tablespoonfuls of olive oil in a bowl.
2. Massage into clean, damp hair and let it soak in 20 minutes. (cover with a shower cap if desired)
3. Rinse of with COOL water (otherwise you will cook the egg!) and style as usual.
Egg Mask
Egg can be used by itself as a hair mask too! I'm not going to go through the steps of this one as it is pretty simple
For normal hair - Use the white and yolk mixed together
For dry hair - Use just the yolk
For oily hair - Use just the white
Apply, leave for 20 minutes and wash off with cool water!
Avocado Mask
Home beauty experts swear by avocado—and not just to repair damaged hair. Its oils (which are light and moist like our own natural skin secretions) and proteins boast the best combination of nutrients for smoothing and weighing down unruly hair.
To Use -
1. Mash up an avocado in a bowl.
2. Apply to clean, damp hair.
3. Let it sit for about 15 minutes before rinsing with water.
